During Women's History Month,GAHS recognizes these women who were some of the "firsts" in their fields in Garner's history:
Dr. Bessie Lane, from the Auburn Community, who graduated from The Woman's Medical College in Philadelphia in 1921. Dr. Lane was one of the first female doctors at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, and in 1940 was the chief of staff of Psychiatry.
Portia Banks, who was one of the public library founders in Garner. Evelyn Stevens and Rosemary Carmichael were also key leaders in this effort, initially sponsored by the Garner Woman's Club.
Kay B. Daughtry, who was the first female elected to the Board of Aldermen (now Town Council) of Garner.
Mary Lou R. Todd was the first female Town Manager of Garner.
